Several countries, governments, and the Kyoto Protocol have created incentives to pull carbon out of the air.  These programs are many and varied, but all say essentially the same thing.  If a business releases a ton of CO2 into the atmosphere in a year, that business should also pull a ton of CO2 out of the air. 

A program of growing popularity is to inject old oil wells with CO2.  The US Department of Energy plans to spend $145 million on this type of technology development over four years.  As Green As It Gets evaluated our resources, and discovered we were lacking $145 million, and an old oil well.  So we fell back on the McTwiggin principle.

A decade or two before CO2 was in the news, and years before I could spell ‘sequestering’, Mrs. McTwiggin took her 2nd grade class to an empty spot behind Carriage Hill Elementary and showed us how to plant a tree.  It’s been sucking up carbon ever since, on a budget largely funded by bake sales.

As Green As It Gets is now sequestering carbon based on the McTwiggin principle.  That is, sticking trees in the ground on a bake-sale budget.

All of the mixed hardwood species we plant in our reforestation programs are good carbon sequesterers.  Some are very effective carbon sinks in their younger years.  At just four years of age, a San Juan will already be absorbing 26 kilograms of carbon per year.  Meanwhile, other trees grow more slowly.  A Ceiba absorbs essentially no carbon in its early years, but when it matures, it can absorb 400 kilograms a year.  A conservative estimate says that, on average, 200 of our rainforest trees will absorb 10 tons of carbon over a period of 10 years. 

You can fund the sequestration of carbon by purchasing a carbon credit. Our producers will do the work in the first year, then Mother Nature will do the rest.
