The Women's Peanut Project
The Women’s Cooperative in El Tizate has a little bit of land and a lot of motivation.  The ladies gathered together on a Friday morning to learn how to plant peanuts from our resident peanut expert, Mercedes, and his assistant Alberto.  After the demonstration, they also planted some macadamia and citrus trees on the same field.

Ixcan Reforestation: 5000 Trees and Counting

Our trip to the rural community of Santiago Ixcan included everything you could hope for – it was muddy, hot, sunny and rainy (yes, all at the same time); we met kind, enthusiastic people; we failed miserably to keep up with the pace of the local farmers; there was a lot of waiting and a lot of food; there were lots of bugs and switch grass; and we sweated.  Oh yes, we sweated.
