The town scheduled two days in June for tree-plantings. More than thirty farmers from the village, plus volunteers from three different agencies, turned up. Almost 1,500 trees were planted on public land.
The enthusiasm shown by the community put us to shame. Ashamed of having done only the least that we could have.
Determined not to make this error of apathy again, we sat down with the town committee and created a plan for planting trees on both private and public land next year.
The town asked for support to plant 10,500 trees in 2009. Community members committed to donate land and labor to create tree nurseries. As Green As It Gets committed to fund the trees in species we propagate - walnut, pine, cedro and other local trees - 6,500 in total.
That leaves 4,000 trees. These 4,000 consist of species such as nispero, piñon and pear, which we don’t normally propogate, as they require special techniques, skilled labor, more nursery space, and extra cost.
You can contribute to the cost of these 4,000 trees by purchasing a carbon credit.
