Ceramics by Venancio™
Venancio Ixcoy turns the most heads at the artisans' market, with his rows of colorful, intricate pieces, shadowed by delicate mobiles chiming in the breeze.

Venancio does all of his own clay work from a humble workshop in his family home. He hardens his low-fire bisque pieces in a kiln he built himself from an old 55-gallon drum. Venancio's wife, Angelica, and their three children, all help with the painting process.

His chicken buses (pictured top right) are his most popular creation. Fit with baskets of produce and passengers in traje on their way to market, they're charming icons of Guatemalan culture. Venancio also makes mobiles and a range of animals and jewelry.

Last month, Venancio held his first "make your own mobile" tour. He invited tourists into his workshop and taught them how to craft and paint their own clay pieces to assemble a colorful mobile.
